| The 3rd Annual Sports Arena Shootout - 4 on 4 Full Court Basketball tournament took place the weekend of April 16th, at East Junior High, McKinley-Annex, and Butte Central High School Gyms. The tournament drew a total of 57 teams, 30 which were from out of town. There were five different divisions, Men’s Open, Men’s B, Women’s Open, CO-ED, and Men’s 35 & Over. This year’s tournament committee made a donation in the amount of $3,600 to Mariah’s Challenge. In 2008 the Inaugural Tournament donated $1,100 to Mariah’s Challenge and last year the tourney donated $2,700 to Mariah’s Challenge for a total of $7,400 in three years. Tournament director Mike Bauer reflected on this year’s tournament. “It went phenomenal. Teams that played here the first and second year keep coming back, and I think a major reason is the great Butte hospitality that the local community shows. We’re on track to get something big going and hope to continue to grow each year. There are so many people and over 150 businesses that have made this event possible and we thank each and every one of them,” said Bauer. Bauer noted that a special thanks be given out to Mark Hoffman who puts in numerous hours helping with the tournament. Leo McCarthy had this to say about the donation; “Mariah's challenge is once again humbled and thankful for the Sports Arena Shootout, specifically to Mike Bauer and Mark Hoffman, for believing in Butte and it's youth. The gracious donation will help and go towards scholarships for Butte’s tough youth who believe in simple self respect and being unique individuals. We applaud their decision making." The tournament drew in talent from Big Sky Conference schools all the way down to teams from neighborhood adult leagues. Bauer noted that there were over one hundred athletes that either currently play, or have college basketball playing experience. The tournament coincided with a get-together of referees, who donated their time and worked for gift certificates. “We had thirty refs donate their time to help out and twenty of them were from out of town” Bauer noted. Special thanks to Rob Tesch for organizing the inaugural referees reunion, Carlene Grant of Apron Ladies for the hospitality room, and to the Hampton Inn and Best Western Plaza Inn for donating the lodging for the refs. |
