2nd Annual SPORTS ARENA Shootout
Sports Arena Shootout

4 on 4 Full-Court Basketball Tournament

The 2nd Annual SPORTS ARENA Shootout 4 on 4 Basketball tournament took place in Butte, MT, May 16th – 17th, 2009.
This years tournament committee made a donation in the amount of $2,700 to Mariah’s Challenge.

“Our goal this year was to double the donation from last year and thanks to the generous sponsors in the mining city, and across the great state of Montana, we were able to surpass that goal,” said Mike Bauer.

Last year the Inaugural Tournament donated $1,100 to Mariah’s Challenge.

This was the second year for the tournament and tournament organizer Mike Bauer said it was a very successful weekend.

“It was a great weekend and I felt the tournament went very well. The level of competition was amazing. Last year we had 15 teams and this year we had 42. Our goal for the 3rd Annual is to have 75 teams. I think we have started something here in Butte that can really turn into something big and will be a huge economy booster for Butte and also a way to generate a large donation for Mariah’s Challenge. I would like to personally thank all the volunteers and sponsors that helped make this tournament a success,” said tournament founder and director, Mike Bauer.

On behalf of the Mariah’s Challenge Board of Directors, Leo McCarthy had this to say, “Mariah's Challenge is again, honored by the generous donation of the Sports Arena Shootout to the Mariah Daye McCarthy Scholarship Foundation. Through the support of Montana's State Farm Insurance Agents, several businesses in Butte and across the State of Montana, and State Farm, Butte's youth who have taken the Challenge, to live a life of brave self-respect, will have a say in their future. This is another fine example of Butte's great big heart in supporting healthy activities for youth under 21 and responsible behavior for those 21 and older. Have fun, grow old together in health and responsible decisions and actions.”

The tournament took place at the McKinley, Civic Center, KC, and Butte Central High School gyms. The tournament drew a total of 42 teams, which 26 were from out of town. There were three divisions, Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and Men’s 35 & Over.

Former Western Montana player, Matt Luedtke was named the Men’s Open MVP while averaging 58.4 points per game. Luedtke led Team Harris with 42 points in the championship game as they defeated last year’s champ, Leo McCarthy Insurance 108-92. Luedtke set a tournament record scoring 100 points in the quarter final game.

Former Carroll College player, Dallas Leslie scored 75 points in an opening round game. Montana Tech standout, Jesse DePell was named the Women’s Open MVP while scoring 19 points in the championship game in leading Lisac’s Tire over Tobacco Free Beaverhead. Desert Horse beat Taco John’s in the championship game of the Men’s 35 & Over, 77-64. Ron Riley was named the Men’s 35 & Over MVP. Riley starred at Arizona State from 1992-1996 and is the schools 4th all time leading scorer and was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1996 draft as the 47th pick by the Seattle Supersonics.
